Max has been working with wood as long
as he can remember. At the age of sixteen he apprenticed to the owner of a small
woodworking company in Iowa, and worked his way through high school, college,
and graduate school with that company. During a long career in higher education,
he continued to maintain an active shop and an intense interest in furniture making.
Max and his wife, Linda, formed Max Woodworking in 1995 specializing in uniquely
designed, beautifully crafted furniture.
Max teaches woodturning at The Society for Contemporary Craft in Pittsburgh, and
a variety of woodworking courses in his own studio. He has given presentations
for The Woodworking Shows, and at many meetings of local woodworking and woodturning
organizations. His work has been shown at Indiana University of Pennsylvania,
Coca, and Boxheart Gallery in Pittsburgh, and at an annual cooperative show at
DesignSpace Pittsburgh. Most of his clients are from the western Pennsylvania
area, but his works may be found throughout the United States, and as far away
as China.
Working in a style that has been termed "eclectic", Max favors clean, contemporary
lines with the absence of superfluous ornamentation. His goal is to reflect or
amplify the setting and the people who commission the work. The content may range
from highly charged symbolism to pure whimsical humor. He has a strong commitment
to sustainability, and favors woods and materials indigenous to the area where
the piece will reside.
